Eastern Forest Justice League

2003 Eastern Forest Defense Camp

Dear Friend of the Forests,

Greetings from the Eastern Forest Justice League. We are a collective of forest defense organizers who hail from bioregions across the Eastern United States. From the Northeast and the Great Lakes down through the Midwest, the Central Appalachians, Southern Appalachia, the Piedmont, and all the way down to the Deep South, we've come together to train existing and aspiring activists from across the East to defend their forests at home through non-violent direct action tactics.

On Wednesday, 6/4, THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND opens at Film Forum. It's a new
documentary that explores the rise and fall of the infamous American
radicals whose goal was to overthrow the U.S. government.

These days, many of us continue to fight capitalism and the actions of the
U.S. government both abroad and at home. This film is riveting-- as a piece
of filmmaking, an historical document and as a catalyst for discussion. THE
WEATHER UNDERGROUND presents portraits of young people who were compelled
to
"bring the war home." It raises myriad questions for us as activists and
global citizens.

Over the last two days, 68 people have been arrested as part of Operation
Homeland Resistance while blocking the doors of the Federal Building,
headquarters of the INS. (See homelandresistance for more
info.) This powerful protest, linking the war abroad with the war at home,
was initiated by NYC-based and people-of-color-led racial justice and
immigrant's rights activists and organizations.

Operation Homeland Resistance is asking for your support tomorrow,
Wednesday, May 7, during a third day of civil disobedience at the Federal
Building. Please show up at 10:00AM -- people are needed to help out in a
range of capacities.

WHAT: support Operation Homeland Resistance action

WHEN: Wednesday, May 7 at 10:00AM

WHERE: 26 Federal Plaza, in Lower Manhattan

The Spring edition of "Perspectives on Anarchist Theory," the Institute
for Anarchist Studies' biannual newsletter, is now available online.

This issue of "Perspectives" interviews historian and radical critic
Howard Zinn. Also included is a piece on what everyday life is like for
Palestinians who live under a military occupation: what techniques are
used to maintain control; how violence and the threat of such differs
from other colonial regimes; and how anarchists may understand this
conflict and contribute to understanding and resistance. Also included
is Chuck Morse's regular contribution, "What's happening: Books and
Events," which reports on new books, articles, and other resources that
are relevant to the anarchist community.

Most of you are aware of the deck of cards printed by the "Coalition of the Willing"
(US, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Marshall Islands, Mongolia... etc.) that portrays
the bad guys in Saddam's government. I have even received spam
offering this desk at a bargain price.

Every country should have such a deck, and if you scross down this web
log, you'll see the electronic version of the U.S. deck.
