"Below is a statement from Barrilee Bannister, currently incarcerated in Coffee Creek Correctional FAcility in Oregon. Bannister was one of 78 women transferred from Oregon to a private, [i] male [/i] prison in Arizona, where they were sexually harassed, abused and raped by male staff members. She and the others contacted the media and initiated a lawsuit against Corrections Corporation of America, resulting in their return to Oregon, an admission of guilt, a public apology and all lawyers' fees paid. A dozen of the offending guards also lost their jobs. Obviously, the Oregon Department of Corrections has not learned from CCA's blunder:
On Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at approximately 7:05 am, correctional officer (CO) Bradly approached me while I was doing my laundry. I was wearing my red shorts, blue sweatshirt & white socks with shower shoes. CO Bradly stared at my chest for approximately 20 seconds until I asked him, "What are you looking at?" CO Bradly responded, "Go out to the corridor and help push meal carts." I said to him, "Sir, I'm doing my laundry. It's my day off. I cannot leave my laundry unattended nor can I go out to the corridor the way that I am dressed."
CO Bradly then stated, "Then go to your cell and put shoes & a bra on. Then go help."
WASHINGTON -- (AP, Reuters Digest) Police arrested 649 people, including anti-capitalist
protesters and bystanders, in a show of force as the annual meeting of
the World Bank and the IMF opened here.
Radical demonstrators had threatened to bring the US capital to a
standstill by blocking traffic, but police moved swiftly on pockets of
protesters in central Washington streets, arresting hundreds and
swinging clubs to clear crowds.

SEPTEMBER 26 On Wednesday night metal barricades
blocked off streets surrounding the World Bank and
IMF, and police wearing black and orange rain gear
stood in a steady downpour, turning away people who
tried to pass through streets they had designated as
off limits. At the corner of Pennsylvania and 18th
Street a bus full of police stood at a curb next to
the World Bank Infoshop. Inside the shop were
paperweights, umbrellas, ponchos and the like, bearing
the white and blue World Bank logo. Outside, a cop
carried a case of soda from a van into the bus.
US Military Charged with Operating a Secret Chemical Weapons Program
"Sunshine Project" Provides Evidence for US Violation of International
Law
(Austin and Hamburg, 24 September 2002) -- The Sunshine Project
today accuses the US military of conducting a chemical weapons
research and development program in violation of international arms control law.
The charges follow an 18 month investigation of the Department of
Defense's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate (JNLWD). The
investigation made extensive use of the US Freedom of Information
Act to obtain Pentagon records that form the primary basis of the
allegations. An array of documents, many of which have been
posted on the Sunshine Project website, demonstrate beyond a reasonable
doubt that JNLWD is operating an illegal and classified chemical weapons
program.

A new front in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been
opened in the United States. This has not been done by
Islamic fundamentalists, or radical Palestinians. It has
been done by American and Israeli computer hackers. Action
on this new front has taken the form of identity theft,
harassment, incitement to harassment, defamation of
character, and malicious misrepresentation through the
misuse and misappropriation of computer e-mail facilities
and lists. In the process, the reliability of the web based
system of communication has been undercut, the integrity of
some very prestigious universities have been called into
question, and the judgment of law enforcement authorities
made to look tainted with bias. Let me give a number of
examples.

'Tent City' located on Toronto's waterfront, was forcefully evicted in a
massive sweep-and-clear operation involving dozens of city cops and
private
security guards. The hardware giant Home Depot (which owns that tract of

re-settling Tent City residents and creating interim housing on another
nearby piece of city-owned land. Instead, earlier today without any

at all to residents, they decided to proceed with the eviction of more

protesters planning to descend on this week's meeting of the World Bank

Come on Down, Stay the Weekend, Enjoy the Community Picnic!
An attempted police evacuation is expected at dawn on Saturday the 21st. The
residents of the Woodwards Squat have resolved collectively to lock arms in
the event of such a forced attempt and will continue their peaceful,
non-violent occupation until their five demands are met. Your presence on
Saturday morning is essential to keep the squat alive! Bring a blanket or
sleeping bag and stay the weekend or just come up the ladder to talk with
people about social housing issues throughout the day. Support outside of
the Woodwards building is equally important all weekend long.
If you are unable to make it on Saturday, come down on Sunday the 22nd for a
community picnic between 1 at 3pm. It's a potluck protest in support of the
people inside & a celebration of the first week of occupancy!
