Lineup of Films for 2009 NYC Anarchist Film Festival Announced; Part of Week-Long AnarchyFest in New York
What: One-day festival of contemporary documentary videos on current events and social movements from Palestine to Greece to the Lower East Side.
When: Fri., April 10, 1 p.m. until late.
Where: Sixth Street Community Center, 1-7 p.m., 638 6th Street betw. Aves. B&C; Millennium Theater, 8-10 p.m., 66 East 4th Street betw. Second Ave. and Bowery; Yippie Café, 10 p.m. until late, 9 Bleecker Street at Bowery.
NEW YORK – The lineup of entries for the day-long 2009 NYC Anarchist Film Festival has been finalized. The Film Festival is part of the week-long AnarchyFest that also includes the 2009 Anarchist Book Fair (Sat.-Sun., April 10-11) and the Anarchist Art Festival (Thur.-Sat., April 8-10). This 3rd Annual edition of the Film Festival is being held in honor of Brad Will, New York-based journalist and videographer who was murdered in Oaxaca three years ago by government forces attempting to crush the local insurgency against a corrupt government.
Documentary videos to be screened will include eyewitness film of Palestinian resistance to Israeli terror in Gaza and the popular uprising that recently swept Greece. Big Noise Films will screen Beyond the Walls: The Battle for Iraq's Future and a selection of short films from Iraq.
Videos will be also screened on global and local environmental defense efforts, militant feminism, and radical movements for justice and democracy in Oaxaca, Mexico; India; Europe; Latin America; and the U.S. The latter will include film from the 2004 Republican National Convention protests in New York, which challenge the state’s unconstitutional “anti-terrorist” statutes; and video from the Lower East Side's famous “Donut Riot” that ended in a skirmish with police in Tompkins Square Park last summer.
