Their Crisis and Ours: A Symposium on the Financial Crisis and Austerity

In 2007 the 'Sub-prime' mortgage crisis in the US triggered a global economic meltdown larger than any depression seen before. The collapse of key banks and financial institutions was met by government bailouts to prop up the most destructive and speculative form of capitalist activity we know. These bailouts maintained private control over profits, whilst nationalizing debt and risky 'toxic' assets. A climate of austerity created by the bailouts now looms over us, threatening to erode social, economic and environmental conditions within the UK and abroad.
This symposium brings together a number of different activists and thinkers to offer an accessible introduction to the crisis and its causes, as well as to discuss responses and strategies for organizing against austerity and for democratic control of the banking and finance sector. The day will include a mix of presentations and small and large group discussion.
The day will be split into 4 sessions:
-An introduction to the financial crisis
-Historical roots and the long term causes of the crisis
-Political, social and environmental implications of the crisis
-Organising against austerity and for democratic control of the banking
and finance sector
