Prevented By Armed Military From Flying To Greens Meeting In Chicago

Armed government agents grabbed Nancy Oden, Green Party USA coordinating committee member, Thursday at Bangor International Airport in Bangor Maine, as she attempted to board an American Airlines flight to Chicago.

"An official told me that my name had been flagged in the computer," a shaken Oden said. "I was targeted because the Green Party USA opposes the bombing of innocent civilians in Afghanistan."

Oden, a long-time organic farmer and peace activist in northern Maine, was ordered away from the plane. Military personnel with automatic weapons surrounded Oden and instructed all airlines to deny her passage on ANY flight. "I was told that the airport was closed to me until further notice and that my ticket would not be refunded," Oden said.

By MICHELLE SAXTON, Associated Press Writer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A judge ruled Thursday that a 15-year-old sophomore cannot form an Anarchy Club or wear T-shirts opposing the U.S. bombing of Afghanistan because it would disrupt school.

Katie Sierra was suspended from Sissonville High School for three days for promoting the club. She was also told she could not wear T-shirts with messages such as: "When I saw the dead and dying Afghani children on TV, I felt a newly recovered sense of national security. God Bless America.''

In a complaint filed with her mother, Sierra argued her right to free speech was being denied.

Circuit Court Judge James Stucky agreed that free speech is "sacred'' but he found that such rights are "tempered by the limitations that they ... not disrupt the educational process.''

Sierra said she'll pursue the dispute.

"I don't want war. I'm not for Afghanistan,'' Sierra said. "I think that what we're doing to them is just as bad as what they did to us, and I think it needs to be stopped.''

James Withrow, lawyer for the Kanawha County Board of Education, argued that an Anarchy Club was inappropriate because students "do not feel that their school is a safe place anymore.''

"Anarchy is the antithesis of what we believe should be in schools,''
Withrow said.

Sierra's attorney, Roger Forman, said she is "being punished for expressing her opinion.''"

The Politics of Upward Redistribution

Henry C.K. Liu

The Bush Administration is totally consistent in the economic policy of
its war on terrorism. Taking care of business is the core of the
supplyside ideology of market fundmentalism. It is consistent with the
strategic thrust of its geo-political war on terrorism, through a
coalition of state power, notwithstanding that, terrorists of all
different stripes generally identify social injustice with state power,
both domestically and internationally. Radical, or extremist Islam
fundamentalism considers both the secular Islam states as well as the
theocratic Islam states part of the regime of nation states that has
given birth to the politcal and socio-economic-cultural imperialism that
acts as the midwife of political terrorism. In this respect, it is not
much different from other religious funamentalism. The Church of Rome
went through the conflict between Church and State, and reached a
compromise of spearating the two conflicting institutions in the
spiritual and the political spheres. Religous fundamentalism has yet to
completely accept this separation, even in the US, where the intrusion
of religion into state supported education remain active. Islam
fundamentalism, insulating from Western liberalism, continues to reject
secularism in politics and culture.

"It could have been any of us." Through the shock of 9/11
and the realization that several thousand people were
suddenly dead and missing, we also considered the millions
of lives lost and damaged as a result of unwanted U.S.
government intervention here and abroad. Patriotism and
hysteria are on an upswing, while states and global capital
are negotiating, and sometimes competing, for position
around the world. Anarchists have a role and an
opportunity. The situation demands an analysis that looks
at the past and thinks forward.

Upon achieving victory, the members of fundamentalist Islamic parties engaged in acts of barbaric violence and intimidation against the minority communities. Women were kidnapped and gangraped in public view and men were killed. The eyes of victims were gouged out. The houses of minorities were torched and people were driven away. The Islamic fundamentalists have even poisoned the ponds so that minorities mainly belonging to the Hindu community cannot even drink water. Many religious shrines of minorities have been destroyed. More than 15 thousand Hindu minority families in Barishal and Bagerhat districts of Bangladesh have been forced out of their homes.

The 11th September incident has had a devastating effect on the politics of different trends in Pakistan. It has polarized the politics of each group to an extent never seen before. The Pakistan Peoples Party, the party of the Bhuttos, is now openly supporting the stand of the military regime to go for an all out help for the Americans. So is the case of the Mutihida Qaumi Movement (MQM) the party of the immigrants with a mass base in Sind cities. In the North West Frontier province, the National Awami Party, the largest party of the Pushtoons has also changed sides from opposing the military regime to openly supporting the regime.
