Reclaim the Imagination! Aesthetic Politics in Social Movement :: Sunday October 25th :: London :: 6:30-7:30pm :: Main Hall in the Kobi Nazrul Centre As part of the This is Not a Gateway Festival Autonomous politics have a long and rich relation with artistic production and movements. From Dada through Reclaim the Streets, aesthetic politics have been essential in expanding the collective imaginations of revolutionary movements, turning social resistance into joyful encounters, communicating rage at injustice with poetry and beauty. Come join us to celebrate the release of two books that explore the ongoing relation of radical aesthetics and politics: Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today by Josh Macphee (PM Press), a major new collection of contemporary politically and socially engaged printmaking, and Imaginal Machines: Autonomy & Self-Organization in the Revolutions of Everyday Life by Stevphen Shukaitis (Autonomedia / Minor Compositions), an philosophical inquiry into the formation of collective imagination in social movement organizing. Josh and Stevphen will present and discuss their books while engaging in a broader conversation about art and politics with Anja Kanngieser.

London Free University Plans Hackfest We believe there can be no right to annex thought and learning, to erect concrete buildings in which to lock up knowledge. Their universities create obedience, uniformity of thought and docility. Beyond their gates is our intellectual freedom - within them are the resources we need. Until these gates are opened for all we shall remain alienated from each other and from our futures. We want to question access to knowledge, the uniformity of success and production, and to experiment with alternatives and the redistribution of knowledge. We invite you to cross these borders and see where we can go with the freedoms we create for ourselves.

The Heckler Reverend Billy Talen Three weeks to go to the election. Last night I interrupted Mike Bloomberg’s opening statement in the debate. We’re trying to poke through the $65 million TV screen that weighs down on us in Gotham City. My prayer for bravery was posted with you earlier yesterday, “…there is something powerful in a quiet voice when the words are whole.” I warmed up my voice shouting in the street before they opened the El Museo del Barrio to those of us who had political connections or groundling tickets like me. The hour before the debate, on the edge of Central Park in the twilight, Savitri and I hosted a Coney Island sideshow – a shoe-tossing with an effigy of Mike Bloomberg. We had debated all week about throwing a shoe at him during the debate, or maybe even a light-weight not-injurious Chinese flat-heel, but lawyer friends explained assault charges and the likelihood of being shot before I could get my missile out of my hand.
Mobilization for Health Care for All Goes National http://is.gd/4i2NI, from Healthcare-NOW! In just two more days, the Mobilization for Health Care for All goes national. When we launched this campaign we envisioned about 100 people signing up to sit in in the first weeks of the campaign – but with over 700 already, we’re now well on our way to 1000 pledges. And we originally talked about sit-ins happening in 3 or 4 cities on October 15th – today we’re proud to announce that “Patients Not Profit” sit-ins will be happening in at least 9 cities across the country this Thursday! Below you’ll find a list with each city, the details for the action, and a contact. If you’re close enough to attend one of these actions and you’re not plugged in yet – please contact the local coordinator, join in, show up. Local leaders in these cities have worked tremendously hard to pull these actions together with very little time and we need to do everything we can to support them and make each one as big and strong as possible.
Statement in support of Abahlali baseMjondolo 9 October 2009 The South African shack-dwellers' movement Abahlali baseMjondolo (AbM) is an egalitarian, democratic organisation dedicated to the self-empowerment and self-education of thousands of disadvantaged people. We the undersigned support the resolve of AbM activists to play a leading part in the determination of their own future, and to help make, rather than suffer, public decisions about housing, land, and development. We condemn all acts of violence and intimidation against AbM members and the residents of South Africa's informal settlements. We condemn any participation or collusion of the government and police in the recent assault against AbM leaders and their families, and in the destruction of their homes and offices. We call on the government to do all that is required to repair the damage done in recent weeks, and to protect AbM activists and settlement residents from any future violence; we note in particular the repeated death threats against AbM President S'bu Zikode and Vice President Mashumi Figlan. We call on the ANC to respect and facilitate, rather than discourage, popular participation in the governing of South Africa.
Istanbul Days of Resistance Conclusion report of 1-8 October anti-capitalist resistance days against the IMF and WB summit We are informed that on 7th of October while we were sieging İstanbul from all sides, the IMF and the World Bank meeting had to be finished in a haste. So we, as the ungovernable of resistanbul, gathered here to announce our own riotistanbul decisions against the so-called Istanbul decisions of the governors. We are announcing our own economic and social program which is both a proposal for a libertarian anti-capitalist way of life that we have already started to create in different sectors of society, as well as a proposal for a way out of global capitalism. Our program consists of a series of resistance and counter-struggle tactics that can dig down the roots of the capitalist world system that has colonized all parts of our life.
