In the Streets

Historic Antiwar Demonstration

By Jack A. Smith

One of the most extraordinary antiwar manifestations in the long history
of peace activism in the United States took place in Washington April 20
when up to 100,000 people participated in different gatherings and then
joined for a unified march to a concluding rally in front of the
Capitol. The police estimated at least 75,000 demonstrators were in the
streets. The numbers alone were not historic, though the crowd was huge
by any standard. But three other factors contributed toward the
uniqueness of this action:

Monday 22 April 2002

working towards these goals, we will act with full respect for our

Conference outside of AIPAC at Washington Hilton; Creative Actions

5:30pm, A22 Collective Anti-Capitalist Actions Against Sharon & Racism,
Washington Hilton, 1919 Connecticut Avenue in Adams Morgan.
Anti-Capitalist Bloc in solidarity with others against Sharon & Racism
will be forming a Bloc at the protests at the AIPAC conference where
Ariel Sharon will be speaking. We are asking people to dress in black
as an expression of defiance and mourning and to use all black banners
with white lettering and if you need to mask up use a khafiyah (arab
headress). Some black coffins would also be good. We are asking
individuals not to engage in militant tactics during the A20 march upon
request of other organizing groups, this is more of a concern than a
block of such tactics. There will be three types of actions people can
participate in at the Hilton on April 22nd. The only public action we
are revealing at this time is a cross between a Green type of action
and a Yellow action this action will involve symbolic low-risk of
arrest civil disobedience or direct action, there will be other direct
actions beside the call to Mass Action. Types of Actions: Green
(permitted protest pit near Hilton); Yellow (non-violent civil
disobedience, more than symbolic civil disobedience, near or around the
Hilton); Red (confrontational tactics, more than symbolic or yellow
types of civil disobedience.) Yellow and Red actions should not occur
near or around the Green zone (South of T St on the West Side of
Connecticut Ave). Red actions should not interfere or jeapordize
yellow actions. All to be worked out at the spokes council. We are
not planning any Red types of actions we encourage Red types of
Affinity Groups to attend the Spokes Council to work out what Yellow
types of Action are planning to avoid any unecessary conflicts. We
will have several scenarios for discussion at the Spokes Council, we
will also be taking new scenario proposals & getting updates as
information on police tactics become more available. Post reports
about completed actions to DC IMC.

Amid the reports of mass graves and massive human rights violations
in the latest attempt of the IDF to re-occupy Palestinian areas
we note that the underlying problem is not ethnic or religious
strife, nor Israel's right to defense, rather it is the inherent
racism of the elites in American Society and Israelis society
that are comprised of the Capitalist class. We are all familiar
with the victims of this system. Palestine is just the latest
example of it. We see the same thing in Columbia as well.

Excerpt from March 2002 issue of Barricada, Agitational Monthly of the
NorthEastern Federation of Anarcho-Communists.

The following is our response to issues raised by the "Open Letter to Those
Involved in the Black Bloc", printed in Volume 2, issue #12 of Willful
Disobedience, as well as to a lot of criticisms and issues that arose on the newswire discussion around this letter. The response is not as
complete, or necessarily well structured, as we would have hoped, due to
time constraints, but we do feel that it goes a long way towards correcting
some of the misconceptions around our idea of what black blocs should be,
what purposes they serve, when they are of use, how they should be
organized, etc.

Angels of Public Interest Will Descend Upon the FCC

Friday, March 22; 3:00-6:00 PM

445 12th Street NW; Washington, DC

Hark Ye, Friend!

Angels of Public Interest shall descend upon Washington, DC three hours past noon on the 22nd day of March in the vicinity of the Federal Communications Commission at 445 12th Street NW. The Angels shall resolutely teacheth those who command power within the FCC that Media and Communications Technology Should Forever Serve People Over Profits.

We encourage all Angels such as yourself to come to the gathering dressed in your best Angel garb -- halo, wings, glitter, the whole nine yards.

If your halo and wings are still at the dry cleaner, perhaps you could at least keep with the Angel color-scheme by wearing a solid white or black shirt. Still, an Angel's presence and attitude are always more important than his or her duds, so if you can't dress up, don't worry about it. This is your time to shine!
