The Rainforest Foundation has been supporting the struggle of the Panará people of the Brazilian Amazon for many years. It has been a rewarding experience: once on the verge of extinction, the Panará have been able to secure their traditional lands, and are reclaiming their culture and way of life. It is one of the few stories of hope and victory to celebrate in the Amazon today.

PSY-GEO-CONFLUX 2003 marks the inauguration of an annual event dedicated to current artistic and social investigations in PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY ("the study of the effects of the geographic environment on the emotions and behavior of individuals"). Part festival and part conference, it brings together visual and sound artists, writers, and urban adventurers to explore the physical and psychological landscape of the city.

The Future of War: Aesthetics, Politics, Technologies is a two-day
conference that examines the increasingly complex crosstalk between the military, the entertainment industry, the media, artists, and computer scientists. It looks at war, not simply as a utilitarian means to an end, or within the more familiar political and strategic accounts of it, but as a cultural process involving particular ways of seeing, picturing, narrating and imagining--from the architectural spaces of war and violence (both physical and virtual), to the cinematic language of combat films and reality-based military television; from first-person shooter Internet gaming and military simulations, to the computer and installation work of artists. Presented by Thundergulch, the new media initiative of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council; the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School; the World Policy Institute, New School University; and the Computer Instruction Center at The New School."

increase in the level of forest destruction on public
lands, the erosion of hard-fought legal protections
(As inadequate as they were, they were better than
nothing.), and the amount of government repression on
groups fighting for social and environmental justice.
Bush and his cronies are organizing to continue
profiting from injustice and exploiting the Earth. WE
ARE ORGANIZING TO PROMOTE SOCIAL JUSTICE AND

The events are organized around the need for direct action against the war and with respect for a diversity of tactics. This should be the largest local peace mobilization in 30 years and we need your help to make it happen. The majority of convergence events are being organized by the Pittsburgh Organizing Group, The Thomas Merton Center, and the TMC's Anti-War Committee.

Tactics: Since September the Pittsburgh Organizing Group, the Thomas Merton Center and organizations/affinity groups from throughout the region have been working on different elements of a regional convergence against war to take place January 24-26th, 2003 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This includes pog's organizing of a framework for large scale direct action against war as part of a larger mobilization that weekend. Groups are working together to put on a comprehensive weekend of actions and events. The events include: a large permitted rally, numerous teach-ins, forums, and other educational events, marches of all kinds, direct action, street threatre, 15+ hours of concerts, a vigil, a parade procession, radical cheering and signing, dancing, various bloc's, and many other to be determined activities. If you are opposed to the Government’s militaristic policies at home and abroad there is a place for you at these events. Not everyone will want to attend every event and that's ok. Each of us can take part as we see fit. Effectiveness is in diversity. We support a diversity of non-violent tactics from flyering, vigils, holding signs on the corner, pre-announced (to the police) symbolic arrests, and active blockades. We also welcome coordinated autonomous actions. There are MANY opinions within the peace movement on what an effective direct action entails and it's likely that Jan 24-26th will reflect a multitude of these. We encourage all groups and individuals opposed to the ongoing war to open the lines of communication so that we can come together and figure out ways to have our actions work in tandem.
