1. BACKGROUND ON THE WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM (WEF)

What is the WEF?

Every year, 1,000 top business leaders, come together to shape the global
agenda, while political elites and media luminaries gaze on admiringly. The
World Economic Forum (WEF) will hold its annual meeting at the Waldorf
Astoria Hotel in New York City from January 31st to February 4th 2002. By
its own description, the WEF is a special club of elite business leaders,
whose annual meeting is the world's global business summit.

What is the WEF's agenda?

At the New York WEF summit, the world's richest CEOs will collaborate with
the world's most powerful politicians to set the global economic agenda.
Meanwhile, in the halls of Congress, the world's most powerful politicians
are collaborating with the world's richest CEOs to expand the "war on

Trans Gas Energy is planning to build one of the largest power plants in New York City on the Williamsburgh, Brooklyn waterfront at North 12th St. This plant would spew hundreds of tons of sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, formaldehyde and other toxic pollutants into the air each year.

There are already 5 existing or permitted power plants along a 1 1/2 mile
stretch of the North Brooklyn waterfront, and 97 facilities with air pollution permits within one mile of the TGE power plant site, contributing thousands of tons of toxic emissions into the air each year.

LiveWork Coalition Members and Friends,

Please be reminded that we will be having a very
important event this Sunday, December 16th,
4:30PM-5:30PM, to commemorate the D.U.M.B.O. evictions
of December 2000. This will be a Candlelight Rally at
the site of the evictions, 247 Water St.

The press and our legislative representatives will be
there, including Joe Lentol, Richard Gottfried and
others. A large turn-out will send a strong message to
the press and the legislators.

We need everyone to donate an hour of their time this
Sunday to stand with us in support of A5580, The Next
Generation Loft Law.

Jon Jost writes: "Hello,

We are a group, operating from Dv.com's web site (Community > Forums > Cinema Electronica) planning on making in the coming year a global portrait, to be posted on the
internet, and at the conclusion turned into an installation work and perhaps some kind of linear
cinema piece to show in festivals or other suitable venues.

Our present plan is that participants shoot a one minute shot each week, under a minimal bit of
aesthetic and topical guidance so as to make the total communal work coherent. Of this minute,
those who can would be asked to post 10 to 20 seconds of each shot to a website presently being
established for this purpose. Simple instructions will be given for posting. At the conclusion of
the year participants would be asked to post their tape (or a copy) to me, Jon Jost - moderator of
Cinema Electronica, to assemble (with lots of community advice, I hope) into a work presentable
as an installation, DVD, and/or tape.

The central intention is to attempt to make a global portrait - the world, circa 2002, as seen
through the eyes of those participating.
We hope to attempt as well to be inclusive of those - the vast majority of humans - who do not
have the means and cannot afford to so show their world.

Our intention is to begin on January 1, 2002, so time is short. If you can participate, or can point
us to web addresses or email lists which would be useful in broadening our participating
members, please let us know.

Thank you,

Jon Jost, on behalf of those working on the Worldview 2002
Cinema Electronica. Contact me at laragreen@netscape.net"
